And the dog is supposed to be confiscated and the matter turned over to the authorities meaning trouble for the "owner" of the dog. You can see this blood has been on this dog a while. See how it is drying and is dark. This dog has gotten no care.

Abandoned Dog Getting No Relief From Head Of Central New York SPCA

(Please email the district attorney to encourage them to help this dog. Email
alisonfineberg@ongov.net) Thank you.

(Below: An abused pit bull. Not the one in this story.)

Thank you for taking an interest in this dog who was abandoned in a boarded up house where the floors were so saturated with urine and feces they were starting to give way. It doesn't matter what state you live in to put in a good word for this dog.

I love animals and when I read about this story in the local NY newspaper one afternoon, I took a real interest and called the SPCA to find out how the dog in the article was doing. I received a voicemail which I still have from Ross Arena, Cruelty Investigator for the CNY SPCA telling me "Everything in that article was a misunderstanding. I gave the dog back to the owner, the owner has the dog". I consulted with the reporter for the story who said she got everything from the police report. And so I got in touch with the investigating police officer.

After you read this story, please email
the local district attorney's office about getting justice for this dog.
Alison Feinberg is the bureau chief. alisonfineberg@ongov.net(The city court bureau is responsible for the prosecution of any city ordinances, violations, misdemeanors and motor vehicle and traffic violations in the city of Syracuse.) This is because the SPCA will not help. So I was told by a rescue group that concerned citizens may contact the district attorney's office themselves if they are aware of a crime. That is the only reason I have mentioned this.

Police Captain Becky Thompson who was the investigating police officer went back the second day to check on the dog and the dog was back in the house! Contact Captain Becky Thompson of the Syracuse, NY police department to verify anything you read on this website about the conditions the dog was found in and her assessment of how the situation was ultimately handled based on the evidence. Officer Thompson had turned the case over to SPCA animal cruelty because she wanted the best for the dog.

I contacted the SPCA to discuss this and the director there will not speak up for the dog. He says the cruelty investigator has discrection. He may have discretion but he doesn't have discretion when it comes to enforcing the law. It is OK to give someone a warning with a very minor issue that was perhaps a mistake. But this is no minor issue and it certainly was not a mistake. This set of facts lines up with what the cruelty law defines as a misdemeanor. There is simply no way getting around it.

The cruelty investigator is supposed to investigate and then turn the matter over to the District Attorney. But he didn't do that so there must be some input from the people at large voicing concern about why this animal "owner" was not charged by the cruelty investigator.

On their website, the CNY SPCA has a definition of cruelty and they are not even living up to their own definition, let alone NYS Cruelty Laws.

Click here for CNY SPCA website description of animal cruelty(Scroll down to "what constitutes cruelty")

The law in NY says:

356. Failure to provide proper food and drink to impounded animal.

A person who having impounded or confined any animal, refuses or neglects to supply to such animal during its confinement a sufficient supply of good and wholesome air, food, shelter and water, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or by both.

Syracuse Officers, who were responding to a call in the 500 block of Seymour Street Sunday, heard a dog barking in a boarded up house at 549 Seymour St. Police needed to unscrew a door to enter the house.

Inside, officers found the dog in a bedroom closet. The floors were so saturated with urine and feces, they were starting to give way, police said. Officers found an empty dog food bag and empty water jugs in the closet.

The house had no electricity and no running water; it's unclear how long it had been uninhabited, police said. SPCA animal cruelty officers confiscated the timid, emaciated dog, police said.

Syracuse police find dog locked in abandoned house

Syracuse officers who were responding to a call in the 500 block of Seymour Street Sunday afternoon heard a dog barking in a boarded-up house at 549 Seymour St.

Because there was no longer an entryway, they unscrewed doors and found the dog in a closet in a back bedroom. The floors were so saturated with urine and feces, they were starting to give way and there was no access to fresh air. Officers found an empty dog food bag and empty water jugs in the closet.

The house had no electricity and no running water. It's unclear how long it had been uninhabited. A neighbor told them a man comes once or twice a month to check on the dog and that's been going on for about four months.

SPCA animal cruelty officers confiscated the timid, emaciated dog. Police are still trying to determine who left it there.

To contact a television reporter about this story please email Joleene.DesRosiers@news10now.com in Syracuse, NY. To contact a newspaper reporter, contact dcase@syracuse.com in Syracuse, NY.

I contacted cruelty investigation at the Central New York SPCA. Consequently I was called back and left a message by Investigator Ross Arena that "this is a misunderstanding, the dog has an owner, was not abandoned and is back with his owner". "We gave the dog back to his owner". He said what was in the newspaper article was a misunderstanding as well.

The police report says Ross Arena is the cruelty investigator on the case who "confiscated the timid and emaciated dog" however the SPCA Director says that Arena claims the dog was not emaciated. What about the 'confiscated' part? According to the investigating police officer, when she went back the second day to check on the dog, the dog was still in the house! Shouldn't the owner or perpetrator have be cited or arrested by the cruelty investigator based on the laws outlined further above? How about that until a decision was made (by the court perhaps) as to the fitness of the "owner" to regain custody, that the dog would stay in the hands of the SPCA? The important thing here is that the dog, a young pit bull had been placed alone in a boarded up house and was given back to it's owner according to the cruelty investigator. When I look at the laws posted earlier in this story, this was a crime that had taken place however it was overlooked. The laws of NY outline animal abuse. You give second chances for extremely obvious minor issues. Not for situations like this whether the cruelty investigator has discretion or not. His job is to enforce the law, not circumvent it.

UPDATE: July 6, 2009 I got an email from Mr. Morgan informing me he considers the case closed. He said the dog is in "more favorable" conditions. End of story. That was it. No more information. The email said "If you have any further questions, please contact me". And so I replied that I do have questions which is why I mailed him a letter June 24, 2009 asking for a sit down meeting. He has not responded to my email reply.

UPDATE: July 1, 2009. I spoke with Officer Thompson today to ask her if she had spoken to Mr. Morgan who told me he was going to contact her when I first spoke to him. Since I have not heard from Mr. Morgan since that time, I decided to contact Officer Thompson for the express purpose to find out if she knew anything about the well being of the dog. Officer Thompson informed me she has not heard from Mr. Morgan but that she too has thought about the well being of the dog and had hoped to hear from Mr. Morgan for an update because the matter had been turned over to Mr. Morgan's cruelty investigator.

UPDATE: June 20th, 2009. I had a conversation with Becky Thompson, Syracuse Police Department Officer today. Officer Thompson was the investigating officer in this dog case. She gave me some information that I would like to share. Officer Thompson stated that upon finding the dog in the condition she found the dog she wanted the best for the dog and so she called Paul Morgan, head of the Central New York SPCA on his cell phone. She did not get a return call so she called SPCA cruelty investigator, Ross Arena. Arena advised her he was in the middle of something but would get there when he was freed up. By the time Arena arrived, Officer Thompson said the owner had cleaned up much/most of the feces and urine and Arena did not see it.

Being very concerned about the situation, Officer Thompson went back the second day and found the dog in the house again!! She learned that Ross Arena had made an agreement with the owner that the dog could stay in the house with the understanding that the owner would be there daily. Arena had suggested the dog be left on the second floor so it could get some fresh air. Officer Thompson's gut told her this might not work out so she called code enforcement to come check out the property. They did come and declared the property unfit! After the property was deemed unfit (the same property Arena thought it was OK for the dog to remain in) the dog was removed and a friend of the owner took the dog. When Arena arrived the dog was outside. The dog was probably so thrilled to be out of it's misery that the dog looked like everything was OK. However what this dog was exposed to is not to be based on how the dog was when Arena arrived. It is based on all the facts involved.

(Keep going, more after the picture)

I am wondering why did a cruelty investigator make an agreement with an owner for a dog to be left to live in a house as a 4 legged burglar alarm when the house was obviously unfit (and was later declared so by Syracuse Code Enforcement) and where the animal had been found with no food and no drinking water, no access to fresh air and a cut on it's upper lip. The agreement was supposedly based on the understanding that the owner would be there all day working on the house and the dog wouldn't be alone. However when the police officer went back the second day to check, the dog WAS alone!

In addition, whose gut would tell them that this owner from here on in could be trusted to be there every day, all day long("working on the house") with the dog based on the history of the situation. His veracity had already been called into question on a number of issues. That the owner would be there all day with the dog from here on in while working on the house was part of the equation the cruelty officer incorporated in his decision to not charge the owner with a crime! You don't cut deals with criminals. You don't say "From here on in if you act nice I will let it drop that you just robbed a bank". And you don't say, "If you stay with the dog from here on in I will overlook the animal cruelty misdemeanor you clearly committed." The building was a building that was boarded up and the dog was locked up in the boarded up house with urine and feces about ready to cause the floor to give way. The dog had no food, no water and no access to fresh air. That is a crime. New York State Consolidated Laws Article 26, Section 356 of the NYS Animal Cruelty Laws. The crime is clearly outlined and defined. This is a textbook case. I would also like to know if that dog was licensed. This dog has no defenses by which to address this. That a cruelty officer would pass this over only leads me to believe that this is business as usual for the cruelty investigation office at the CNY SPCA.

This dog was not in the house as a pet whereby the owner worked on the house and took the dog with him when he left. The dog lived there alone and isolated as a watch dog! Also the house was deemed unfit and it would appear the owner had done no work on the house and the dog was just there as stated, guarding the property. A young dog forced against it's will into this dangerous and unhealthy not to mention illegal situation!

(Keep reading there is more_

When the dog was found, no one was living there with the dog as the house had no electricity or running water. And with feces and urine piling up, it is obvious no one was coming to take care of the basic needs of the dog. When he got "caught" on June 14, 2009 the owner ran inside to clean up the feces and urine before the cruelty investigator got there. The owner said he was spending alot of time in the house "fixing it up" however please explain how someone could be spending alot of time in a house that has no electricity, no running water, was boarded up and had feces and urine piling up? Arena may have been giving the man a warning or second chance, but at whose expense? Why did it take Officer Thompson to go back the second day to see if things had indeed been corrected for the well being of the dog? Shouldn't this have been the job of the cruelty investigator? Just wondering and thinking out loud.

I have to say after talking to Officer Thompson that she is 100% and was 100% behind the well being of this dog. She made numerous attempts on a daily basis to reach me by phone to return my call, something which is pretty impressive for someone with the busy job she has. Ross Arena has never returned my call to him since I got his message.

To continue, Officer Thompson had staff from the police department take photographs of the environment she investigated. Any inference from anyone that she did not get involved is completely and totally off base. I spoke to this officer at length and she is caring, compassionate and really went out of her way for this dog. I don't believe she was required to go back the second day to check out the situation since the case had been turned over to SPCA Cruelty Investigations and she certainly did not have to call code enforcement and frankly I am not so sure that this situation would be a situation whereby she would be obliged to have photographs taken but she was so concerned about the dog she went the extra mile! I am asking people to contact her and thank her.

Officer Thompson did note the dog had a cut on the top of it's lip. I will never know but would like to know how the dog got this cut. Officer Thompson did say she did not believe the dog looked emaciated.

I have made several attempts to be in contact with Mr. Morgan however have not heard back from him. This is what I have contacted him about:

UPDATE: June 27, 2009 I left a voicemail for Mr. Morgan at the SPCA office asking him to contact me he could let me know if he had gotten a copy of the police report and made contact with the investigating officer which he told me June 19th he was going to do. I also asked him what Ross Arena had found when he went back a week later to check on the dog as Mr. Morgan had also told me at that time this would take place. I will update right here when I hear back.

UPDATE: June 24, 2009 I wrote Mr. Morgan a letter asking him for a face to face meeting to discuss this situation concerning the dog and the investigator's handling of it. I will update right here when I hear back.

UPDATE: June 22, 2009 I emailed the CNY SPCA Attn: Paul Morgan asking him to get back to me with the findings of the cruelty investigator who I was told via Morgan would be going back out to check on this situation "a week later". That week is over with now and I would like to report on the findings of the cruelty investigator. The dog was found on June 14, 2009. I will update right here when I hear back.

UPDATE: June 19, 2009 I had a conversation with Paul Morgan, Director of the Central New York SPCA today. He stated he is very concerned about animals and believes that the right thing be done in all cases. He indicated to me that Ross Arena was not present when the police arrived at the boarded up house at 549 Seymour on June 14th, 2009 but that Ross Arena had been called in and by the time he arrived, the dog was outside. He said Arena himself did not see the dog in the closet with the feces and urine and floor about to give way. He stated Arena was only going by what he himself saw. Morgan said Arena did go into the house and saw two piles of feces and some urine somewhere inside once he went in. Morgan stated Arena gave the dog owner a "warning" instead of arresting him. Something Morgan stated Arena is allowed to do at his discretion. Morgan stated Arena would go back in a week to check on the situation and if the dog was in trouble this time the owner would be subject to more than a warning.

I asked Mr. Morgan that despite whether Arena was present when the dog was found in the closet, shouldn't this case be "revisited" since there are facts that Mr. Arena did not witness for himself and Mr. Morgan said "yes". He said that he is going to get a copy of the police report and make contact with investigating police officer and after doing this will make a decision as to whether the owner should be arrested or the dog confiscated. Morgan said the dog was a young pit bull and that Arena did not believe the dog looked emaciated. Morgan did wonder out loud why the Syracuse Police did not make an arrest if the subject/perpetrator was in sight.

Please email complaints about this to the Oswego County District Attorney Donald Dodd (doddd@oswegocounty.com) who makes the final decision on what happens here. I have found out through a reliable source who has access to this information and who will remain condidential that the District Attorney is 99.9% leaning towards doing nothing since the dog abusers are no longer living in New York. He doesn't want to spend the money to extradite them to New York to face trial!. Email address: doddd@oswegocounty.com

For Officer Jon Pelton of the New York State Police to say:
1) "Though the circumstance may seem suspicious, no charges can be brought against anyone unless there is medical proof that Pebbles was abused."

And 2) "We have no proof of when or how these injuries occurred," he said. "We don't know --she might have been born like that. Until there's medical proof that a crime occurred, my hands are tied."

I have to really question his thought process for saying these things. These are statements that to any one's logic are simply not appropriate to the facts. In the face of clear and convincing animal abuse, I do have to question what would motivate a police officer to make such unbelievable and irrational statements? The common person would question them. Not just people who are familiar with animals.

One guess would be he may have to go to PA to investigate the alleged perpetrators and it would cost the NYS Police money and time because one visit would not be enough. Then there is getting them indicted, getting them to NY and so on. It would be alot of work for the District Attorney. So my belief is they would rather try to dissuade people from taking an interest in this case than pursue it due to the fact that the alleged perps are no longer in NY. But let me ask you this. If that was a human being found in the basement blind and in the condition Pebbles was in, do you think it would be handled like this? Would the police officer be saying, "maybe the person was born like this" and other statements that make me question the intelligence of this officer to actually believe that anyone would 'buy' that line?

Please read on.

Osceola, NY

When the 2-year-old pit bull was found in January, her rescuers didn't think she would survive the winter. The dog was hairless, with her backside covered in sores. She had been blinded, and her teeth had been pulled, her rescuers said.

But Pebbles has made a comeback. The back sores have almost healed. She navigates the rooms of her new home with surprising agility, barking when she hears unfamiliar noises. Still hairless, she wears a pink hand-knit dog sweater to stay warm.

Now that Pebbles is out of danger, the woman who adopted her, Jane Anclam, says that someone should be held accountable for what happened to the dog. Making that happen, though, isn't as easy as she expected. Pebbles was found at a farmhouse in Redfield, in the far northeastern corner of Oswego County. While the last owners of the house, Peter and Barbara Luberto, had not lived at the home for several months, there are conflicting accounts about whether the dog had been abandoned. The Lubertos, who now live in Pennsylvania, could not be reached for comment.

Richard and Jane Anclam, of Osceola, with Pebbles. Anclam, of Osceola in nearby Lewis County, heard about Pebbles through a friend who runs a local dog food pantry. Together, the two women accompanied Trooper Jon Pelton to the basement of the farmhouse, where they found the dog. Anclam said she believes Pebbles had been left there to die.

Pelton said he found evidence that the house had been recently inhabited. He said it looked like a party had been thrown at the house the night before Pebbles was found. Regardless, he said it appears the pit bull had been mistreated.

"It was the worst thing I had ever seen," Pelton said. "I said, 'Holy moly.' It was pretty disturbing to look at." After researching the dog's injuries, Anclam said she thinks Pebbles might have been used as a bait dog. Dog fighting is a felony in all 50states, but the illegal sport has a widespread underground following. Tens of thousands of people nationwide are involved in dog fighting, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals website says.

But Pelton said there is no evidence of a dog fighting ring in Redfield.
Though the circumstance may seem suspicious, no charges can be brought against anyone unless there is medical proof that Pebbles was abused, the trooper said.

"We have no proof of when or how these injuries occurred," he said. "We don't know --she might have been born like that. Until there's medical proof that a crime occurred, my hands are tied."

Dr. Keith Blackmore of Upstate Animal Clinic treated Pebbles. "The history would indicate that Pebbles was abused," Blackmore said. "I've never seen a dog like that." Pebbles would need a head X-ray to confirm that her corneas were lacerated. But Anclam said she doesn't have the money.

She already has spent hundreds of dollars on veterinary appointments and medications for Pebbles. For weeks, she applied cold compresses to the dog's open wounds. Even now, Anclam must feed the pit bull wet dog food so that Pebbles can ingest the food without teeth. It hasn't been easy, Anclam said, but she's happy knowing that she saved Pebbles' life. "She's a member of the family," Anclam said.

"She's the sweetest thing. She's never going to be completely well, but we need to make sure that this doesn't happen to other animals," Anclam said. "That's what we're trying to do."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~

UPDATE: June 27, 2009 I spoke with Mr. Anclam today and he says he is getting the run around. He needs some dog lovers and animal lovers to contact some people by email on behalf of Pebbles! Those email address links are below. Anclam believes he knows who did this to Pebbles but the Oswego County District Attorney's Office will not help them bring this person to justice. Why? The case was investigated by The New York State Troopers (NY State Police) and the investigating officer State Trooper John Pelton has made absurd statements and will not pursue the matter. See them highlighted above! Please contact the The Oswego County District Attorney. His email is: doddd@oswegocounty.com and The New York State Trooper main office to get justice for Pebbles. Contact the Governor of New York who is over the State Trooper. Contact the Attorney General of the State of NY who is over the Oswego County District Attorney. Contact the reporter (bcammeron@syracuse.com) on this story to do a follow up because no one is doing anything to get justice for Pebbles!.How Pelton, the state trooper could say the things he has said in this article are outrageous! He needs to be reported! Contact the Anclam's at: Jane and Richard Anclam,289 Barker Rd.,Camden, NY 13316,(315)599-7344.

Maryland Firm Accused Of Lab Animal Misuse

Posted by Blog Owner at 2:04 PM

by Mana Rabiee
June 08, 2009 - An animal rights group says a leading figure in Maryland's biomedical industry, the BioReliance Corp., has been cited for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The charge includes up to 18 instances in which seemingly euthanized animals regained consciousness while inside a refrigeration unit meant for storing carcasses. Research facilities like BioReliance come under regular inspections by the USDA. But animal welfare groups like PETA say the government office is doing little more than reporting violations when they occur and that inspections are too often based on information voluntarily reported by the labs themselves.

New Yorkers And Others: Help Get This Bill Passed!

Posted by Blog Owner at 8:18 AM

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Assembly Member James N. Tedisco has introduced a bill critical to the welfare of New Yorkers and their animals. Assembly Bill 8444 would significantly increase New York’s current penalties for animal fighting and aggravated cruelty to animals (intentional acts of animal torture and/or killing). The bill would also make it a felony to be a spectator at an animal fight, and to own, possess or keep any animal for fighting purposes.

Additionally, it would represent a step forward in acknowledging the connection between violence to people and violence to animals, as the bill would require courts to order all individuals convicted of intentional acts of cruelty to animals to undergo psychiatric evaluations and treatment necessary to prevent the occurrence of further abuse.

Animal fighting is a serious underground criminal enterprise throughout both rural and urban America. This cruel and inhumane practice results in serious injury and death to countless innocent animals, including many stolen pets. Increasing penalties for both animal fighting and aggravated cruelty would send a strong message that New York will not tolerate these crimes, and would also help ensure that they are properly investigated and prosecuted.

Learn more about Assembly Bill 8444 and ask Assembly Agriculture Chair William Magee to schedule it for a committee hearing! We also recommend that you contact your assembly member and request that he or she support this legislation.

What To Do If You Suspect Animal Abuse

Posted by Blog Owner at 1:26 PM

If you suspect that an animal has been abused, by someone you know or by a stranger, there are things you can do. The most important act you can take is to report the cruelty to your local law enforcement. In some cities, this may be animal control or a department of Humane Law Enforcement, while in other areas the police or sheriffs department may be the agency in charge of these sorts of crimes.

If you are unsure of who to contact, try your local yellow pages, or you can use the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Lookup page to locate the agency in your area. You can also check the front section of your telephone yellow pages and search for Animal Control.

Some areas (especially more rural parts of the country) may not have a designated Animal Control Department, in which case there may be a an branch of a local humane society that has been assigned the power to investigate cruelty cases. If your city does not have an animal control or humane law enforcement department, cruelty cases may fall under the jurisdiction of the sheriff's department or local police.

If you witness animal cruelty in progress and do not know the number to the appropriate agency, CALL 911. Animal cruelty is a CRIME, and the police dispatcher will be able to determine which department should respond.

You don’t have to be an animal expert to help out at your community’s shelter. Since shelters survive on donations, you won't be turned away. Here are some ideas:

1. Offer to walk the dogs and pay attention to them.
2. Bring up snacks to hand out to the animals in their cages.
3. Offer to visit the cats and to pay attention to them
4. Donate old sheets, blankets, towels and washclothes
5. Donate bags or cans of food
6. Offer to help clean the cages and the building
7. Offer to brush the animals, bathe them
7. Donate your professional services (Dog training, professional groomer, vet-tech,
veterinarian, lawyer, accoutant, etc. Any professional service the shelter would
have to pay for without your help.)

Vick describes his actions as "immature". Electrocuting, drowning, shooting, slamming to the ground and killing, starving, raping female dogs at rape stations to breed them, using dogs as bait dogs and killing dogs that don't measure up is not "immature". It is a crime.

Fact: Vick enjoyed placing family pets in the ring with fighting pit bulls
Fact: Vick lied both to the NFL and again during his lie-detector test

Children and Animal Cruelty: What Parents Should Know

Posted by Blog Owner at 2:35 PM

Children and Animal Cruelty: What Parents Should Know

As natural "explorers," don't all children sometimes harm animals?

Absolutely not. While some children kill insects, few torture pets or other small creatures. If allowed to harm animals, children are more likely to be violent later in life. Animal cruelty, like any other violence, should never be attributed to a stage of development.

What kind of children are cruel to animals?

Serious or repeated animal cruelty is seen more often in boys than in girls. Children as young as four may harm animals, but such behavior is most common during adolescence. Cruelty is often associated with children who do poorly in school and have low self-esteem and few friends. Children who are cruel to animals are often characterized as bullies and may have a history of truancy, vandalism, and other antisocial behaviors.

What does animal cruelty indicate about family dynamics?

Researchers say that a child's violence against animals often represents displaced hostility and aggression stemming from neglect or abuse of the child or of another family member. Animal cruelty committed by any member of a family, whether parent or child, often means child abuse occurs in that family.

What should I do if my child or a neighbor's child has harmed an animal?

If you suspect your child has deliberately harmed an animal, talk to your child. Try to discover what caused the cruelty. Communicate with your child, your child's teachers, and your child's friends. The more you know about your child's activities, the better able you will be to guide your child in making compassionate and humane choices.

Something as serious as animal cruelty, however, should not be handled alone. Seek help from a family counselor, school counselor, pediatrician, or clergy member. If you know another child who has harmed an animal, report what you know immediately to your local animal-welfare organization or police department. Alert the child's school principal or guidance counselor.

What should I tell my child about the other child's behavior?

Explain that animal abuse is often a sign of other serious problems and should be addressed by the proper authorities. Knowing that a friend has serious problems can be quite troubling for a child, as can witnessing animal cruelty. Your child may need to sort out the feelings the incident raises.

What should I do if an otherwise "good" child harms an animal one time?

Though innocent exploration may be corrected simply by talking with the child, any time a child causes an animal pain or suffering you should be concerned.

What is the difference between innocent exploration and calculated animal cruelty?

Innocent exploration may come of simple curiosity, but calculated animal cruelty is motivated by a desire to harm. While even innocent acts of cruelty should be addressed, it is particularly important to intervene when a child is insensitive to the obvious distress of an animal, repeats a harmful behavior, or derives pleasure from causing an animal pain.

How can I teach my child to respect animals?

Teach by example; use real-life situations to instill a sense of respect for all life. Invite your child to help you feed the birds or rescue a bug. With older children, discuss animal-cruelty cases publicized in the news. Encourage children to speak up for animals.

How can my child's school incorporate humane education?

Humane education should be part of every school curriculum. The Youth Education Division of The HSUS publishes materials that help teachers establish a classroom theme of kindness, respect, and tolerance. For subscription information, contact The HSUS's Youth Education Division, the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education (NAHEE), at

This Is A "Bait" Dog Used In Dog Fighting. Read More To Learn.

Posted by Blog Owner at 4:51 AM

Monday, May 11, 2009

"Bait" animals are used to test a dog's fighting instinct, and these animals are often mauled or killed in the process. Trainers obtain bait animals from several sources: wild or feral animals, animals obtained from a shelter, or in some cases, stolen pets.[7] Sometimes the animals are also obtained through "free to a good home" ads.[8] According to news reports compiled by the National Humane Society, the snouts of bait dogs are wrapped with duct tape to prevent them from injuring dogs being trained for fighting. Other animals, such as cats and rabbits are also reported to be used as bait animals. Experts have said small dogs, kittens, and rabbits are more at risk of being stolen for bait than larger animals.

Not Everyone Is Happy At The Circus!

Posted by Blog Owner at 8:13 AM

Facts:

1.) TRAINED BY PAIN
Circuses force animals to perform tricks that have nothing to do with how these magnificent creatures behave in the wild. They are taught to do tricks by fear and submission. They are injured while being beat and tortured into doing tricks. That is the way the circuses "teach" them new tricks. An elephant does not understand, "stand on your hind legs" but it understands a beating to obey.

2.) TRAVEL CAN BE TORTURE
Animals in circuses either travel in 18-wheelers or by train. Tigers, who in the wild would secure 75-2,000 square miles, are kept in cages with barely enough room to turn around. Elephants, who walk up to 25 miles a day with their families in their natural habitat, are shackled in chains by their front and back legs so that they can't take a step forward or backward.

3.) LIFE IN CAPTIVITY
Even if conditions were improved and humane methods of training were used, the fact is that keeping wild animals in captivity deprives animals of much of what they value in life. Elephants, tigers, chimpanzees, and other animals used in circuses are complex creatures—not robots to be stacked in boxes and hauled to the next show.

Help A Dog Who Lives Life Outside On A Chain

Posted by Blog Owner at 2:36 PM

Thursday, April 30, 2009

courtesty of PETA

There are two basic ways to improve the life of a “backyard dog.” In some situations, only a quick call to law enforcement agencies will be necessary. In others, it’ll be up to you to build a relationship with the dog’s guardian and get permission to visit and care for the animal. Every case will be different, so carefully assess a situation before you get started.

Call Authorities if a Dog’s Life Is in Immediate Danger or if Chaining Is Illegal
Many counties and cities have laws addressing chained or penned dogs—see the list of such places on the PETA website or look up your local law at the library or on Municode.com. Even if your area doesn’t have such a law, backyard dogs must have shelter, adequate food, and clean water, and they must be provided with veterinary care if they are sick or injured. If a backyard dog is in imminent danger—for example, if the animal is very thin, obviously ill, or injured or if he or she has no shelter or cannot access it—notify authorities immediately. Refer to PETA's guide for more information about what to do if you spot cruelty to animals.

Work With Guardians to Help Backyard Dogs in Non-Emergency Situations
Your best chance to help dogs in non-emergency situations is probably to befriend the dogs’guardians. Using anything other than a polite approach will probably make them angry and hurt your chance to make a difference. You may be pleasantly surprised when guardians help their animals themselves after just one conversation.
Begin by talking to owners about what their dogs need. Avoid being confrontational. Consider starting the conversation by talking about your experience with your own dog or by mentioning that you recently learned some new facts about dogs, such as the following:

*Dogs crave companionship. They aim to please their guardians, and they really want to spend time with them and live with them indoors. Dogs are healthiest and happiest indoors with the rest of the family.

*Dogs left outside need sturdy shelter to protect them from rain, snow, cold, and wind and to provide shade in the summer. Plastic houses or barrels are better than nothing, but they offer no protection from the cold and heat up quickly in the summer. A waterproof, sealed wooden house with the floor elevated a few inches off the ground and with a flap over the entrance is better. Houses should be small enough to allow a dog’s body heat to warm the interior but big enough to allow the dog to get inside, stand up, turn around, and lie down.

*When the temperature drops below 45 degrees, straw (available at feed stores) must be stuffed inside doghouses in order to keep dogs warm. Blankets, clothing, and towels only make conditions worse when they get wet and freeze.
Dogs need an adequate amount of food every day. Food should be provided in a dry, clean dish, not tossed on the ground. Remind dog owners to give dogs more food in the winter, when they need to eat more to keep warm.

*Dogs need fresh water every day. Water should be placed in a heavy bucket or an anchored bowl to prevent it from tipping over (putting the bucket inside a car tire works well). Water helps to prevent heat exhaustion in the summer. It must be checked frequently in the winter to make sure that it hasn’t frozen—dogs will die of dehydration on even the coldest day without water.
Backyard dogs should be checked frequently for fleas, mites, and worms, which rob them of the nutrition that they need and can make even a dog who constantly eats thin. While you work with the dog’s owner to ensure the animal’s physical health, don’t forget to give the dog some attention and playtime too. A happy dog has toys, goes for walks, and spends time with people. Here are some ideas:

*Ask permission to take the dog for walks.
Offer some toys to the dog (with the owner’s approval).
Visit the dog regularly (but be careful not to become a nuisance; follow your instincts based on the guardian’s level of cooperation). Many dogs have eventually been given to people like you who have cared for them, all because of patient and friendly intervention. If you are offered or given a backyard dog—even if you cannot give him or her a permanent home—graciously accept the animal. Visit the PETA website on how to find an animal a good home.

Say "NO!" To Stores That Sell Puppies!

Posted by Blog Owner at 10:23 AM

Above is a picture of a typical "puppy mill".

Puppies are bred in bulk, kept in cages and shipped out in bulk to pet stores. One shipment came in a tractor trailer to FL from somewhere around the MidWest. By the time the puppies arrived they were very sick and the "shipment" was refused. So the truck driver turned around and drove the sick puppies back on the same long trip. Can you believe it?

The Saddest Picture In The World

Posted by Blog Owner at 10:11 AM

Actual picture: A caged, helpless animal reaches out to someone in an animal laboratory.

Animals are cut up and infected with diseases, bones are broken on purpose, and all manner of horrible things are done to animals to test medications. Anything bad that can accidentally happen to a human being is inflicted on animals to see if ways of treating these things can be improved. Things like poking eyes out and other cruel actions. These animals are not sedated. They are treated in a very painful and hurtful way because the labs want a "live" experiment to see how things will really work. And in the end, how well do you relate yourself to a monkey, a dog, a cat, a rat? This animal testing is ludicrous. For example testing anti-depressants on animals that have a completely different brain chemistry than we do. On dogs to be specific! There are dogs in veterinary schools called 'anesthesia dogs'. They are dogs that go under anesthesia for example 10 times a week so students can "practice" giving anesthesia. They are then thrown back in a cage to sleep it off until next day. The science
doesn't match up with reality but those grants keep coming in and so the money is used on useless experiments that only harm animals. There is a huge and I mean huge underground market on stealing pets to sell to labs that test on animals. It is deplorable. What I am saying is this use of animals is not ethical. If it is not OK to treat a person like this, what makes it OK to treat an animal like this? God gave us dominion over animals not to abuse them.

Abuse is not in God's character.

Stop animal experimentation now!

If You Love Them, Set Them Free

Reader Janice has highlighted the plight of Lolita the Orca to us. And sadly, this is one aspect of 'abuse' which even many of us 'animal lovers' are all guilty of... why?

Many animals such as birds, orcas, dolphins, etc, are often kept in captivity for most of their lives. While most zoos and aquariums conform to a certain standard to create an environment that resembles their natural habitat as much as possible, some irresponsible captors are not able to provide such an environment. In the case of Lolita, the layout of the aquarium that she is confined to does not even allow her to swim freely without her running into the structure.

As animal lovers, would you like to see such a magnificent creature perform 'tricks' for you for an hour, then go back to swimming alone and bored in a 'prison', or would it bring a smile in your face whenever you think of Lolita swimming and playing in the open seas, where she belongs?

Are we going to continue patronizing this aquarium to sustain the 'demand' to justify Lolita's captivity? Why not head over to http://www.savelolita.com/ and find out how you can help save Lolita? (click here to open site in new window)

They seemed proud of their 'performance' but all turned a blind eye to the poor creatures, still gasping for air, in pain and fully conscious, their body cooked and ready to be eaten.

Will such madness ever end?

Violent Activism - Right or Wrong?

Posted by veola at 11:36 PM

Friday, March 20, 2009

Just came across this report, which got me thinking.... in our eagerness and desire to fight for the rights of the abused and tortured animals, how far should we take it? Is violence inevitable? Is it a road that peaceful animal lovers should never consider? Or is it a must if we want to see results fast!? Does the ends justify the means? Are we giving the perpetrators a taste of their own medicine? Or are we just stooping down to their level?

What do you think?
Should violence be an option that we will have to consider sooner or later?
Or should all violence be condemned, as 'an eye for an eye' will make the whole world go blind?

I found a very interesting cartoon which serves well to illustrate what I'm trying to say, but I can't afford to pay for it in order to display it without violating copyright laws. But you can view it legally here.

Is fur worth it? Watch the video clip, and ask yourself.

How about Faux Fur? Its not real, so it should be alright?

Ask yourself this. If you don't want a kid to grow up liking real guns, would you buy him a fake one to play with, knowing that the fake gun can't do any harm to anyone?

When someone sees you wearing Fake fur, what is the impression that is projected upon them? They won't be thinking, wow that Faux Fur is so nice and no animals are harmed in the process of making it. They will probably be thinking, wow, nice fur coat, I'm going to get one for myself! In a way, you are helping to advertise the idea that wearing fur is cool.

Be responsible, take it a step further, stop wearing fur or what looks like fur altogether!

How You Can Help...

Posted by veola at 9:13 AM

Many readers of this blog have sent me emails, asking me how they can help fight the cruelty to animals. So I've put down a short list of what you can do to help spread the awareness, to make people sit up and take notice, to make them search deeper into themselves, and take action!

  1. First of all, bookmark or 'Follow' Stop Animal Abuse. And check back as frequent as you can for updates.
  2. Tell your friends and family about Stop Animal Abuse. Copy the URL to this page and send them the link.
  3. You can also drop me an email to provide feedback, to alert me to the latest news and events in your community, or just to say hi!
  4. Link exchange. If you have a website, we can exchange links. Just drop me an email with your website address in it.
  5. Stop buying fur products.
  6. Stop buying products made of animal skin and other body parts.
  7. Stop eating foods that involve causing extreme pain and cruelty to animals, such as Shark's Fin Soup and Foie Gras.
  8. Stop buying pets on a whim, and consider adoption instead. By giving an abandoned pet a home, you are discouraging the sale of these poor young creatures, and at the same time rescuing a poor soul from the clutches of despair, loneliness, and death!
  9. If you are a parent, a mentor or guardian to some children, or a teacher, inculcate the values of compassion and kindness toward animals to the young generation. Its always good to start early, but never to late to start!
  10. Last, but definitely not least, start influencing the people around you from this day on! When you see a friend or family doing something that is in some way abusive or cruel to animals, tell him or her in a calm and gentle manner why you think its wrong, and what we can do to change it.

Mr. Belvedere, Alice Waters, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Manchester United, Liverpool FC, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona FC, U2, Bill Clinton. People and groups of people with lots of influence, especially on kids. My dream is that one day, people like them will come together, put aside their differences, record a video to be played out 'live' at the same time in a Superbowl, Formula 1, Champions League Match, EPL match, World Cup Match, etc. Imagine the impact and power when all these people have one single message! That is my dream... I'm greying this out as its seems ridiculous, but yet, I hope, that it will come true one day. And I hope you will share this dream with me.

Europe Bans Cosmetic Testing on Animals

Posted by veola at 9:12 AM

Friday, March 13, 2009

Finally, some good news?

According to a this, and this, March 11, 2009 will mark a new beginning for animals on mother earth. The European Union will ban Cosmetic Testing on Animals. While such bans have taken place before, to limited success, the significant difference of this latest ban is that not only will it ban the testing of cosmetic ingredients on animals, it will ban the sale of such 'cruel' products as well. This includes the testing work that are outsourced to countries outside of Europe.

However, some companies will be allowed to continue testing when they say a validated alternative is not available. And there are also exemptions to the sales ban, with complete ban to take place progressively by 2013.

So, what can WE do to make sure that all the cosmetic companies take this seriously? What can WE do to make sure that no rich and arrogant cosmetic company will even dare consider protesting and challenging against such bans?

YES! YOU, the CONSUMER, holds the key.
STOP buying from these companies. Choose your products responsibly. Do some research before spending your money on any products.

You can go to the Caring Consumer website to check whether the companies that manufactures your preferred brand are cruelty-free. If they are not listed, go to the companies website and look for the companies' animal-testing policies. Better still, send an email to the company, and ask for their product testing methods and policies. Make your point clear, that if they DO practice testing on animals, you WILL NOT buy their products.

If more and more consumers like you and me do this, it WILL send a loud and clear signal to them. Do not compromise! Spend a few minutes, take some real action, save a thousand lives...

In the name of art?

Posted by veola at 8:18 PM

UPDATE (6-Feb_2009) : It seems that the kitten drowning video may not be available all the time. Hopefully, they will remove it because such a gruesome act should never be considered as a form of creativity!

Reader Jaimie Trampus highlighted to me this video posted on this website. It was in some language I don't understand, presumably Hungarian as what Jaimie mentioned, so I can't really comment on what the narrator was saying in this clip. But, certainly, to destroy an innocent life just for the sake of having more impact or shock value and in the name of art, to me, is totally not acceptable!

Unfortunately, I don't understand the language in the film so I can't comment on what its about.
Maybe the man is saying he was sad to see the video?
It appears that the drowning in the video is taken from another video clip, so we can't really say that
the people behind this clip shot the actual drowning...

Can someone who understands what was said in the clip, and in the website?

You DON'T need FUR

Imagine yourself being kept in a tiny cage with many others, with barely enough room for everyone to lie down or sit properly.

Then, one day, one by one, the others kept in the cage with you are being led away, one by one.

You can hear them cry, scream, and moan in agony. You can see them being bound and tortured, and ultimately, skinned, alive.

You know it's going to be your turn, soon.

Well, imagine no more, because this is what people in many places all over the world are treating the animals. They are being skinned alive, all because of the vanity of human beings.

Cats, dogs, minks, racoons, etc. They are all suffering this cruel fate, all because some folks think they need to wear such things.

Please find some time and visit this link, from furisdead.com. Read about it, find out more, and tell everyone you know and care for, that we should stop buying such stuff, and therefore reduce and eliminate the demand for it.

You may think your part is too small to matter, but, believe me, every little effort from every single person counts. Educate our future generation, show them the website, explain the pain and suffering men put them through, guide them. Make a start, now.

Thanks to Geraldine Koh for highlighting this.

See how animals were subjected to the cruelty of mankind, all in the selfish name of progress and betterment of the human race. But, as a result, what sort of a human have we become?

A picture from the Silver Spring monkeys case, PETA's first investigation. The monkeys were placed in such restraining devices and their reactions to noxious stimuli (flames from cigarette lighters, surgical pliers that pinched their skin, etc.) were monitored. PETA first uncovered the abuse of animals in experiments in 1981, launching the precedent-setting monkeys case. This resulted in the first arrest and conviction of an animal experimenter in the United States on charges of cruelty to animals, the first confiscation of abused laboratory animals, and the first U.S. Supreme Court victory for animals in laboratories.
We abuse them for food, pleasure, experiments, and sometimes even out of curiousity. But little that we know that, for all the abuse we have inflicted upon them, it is now coming back at us full circle in the form of super-germs and mutated virii-strains that cannot be killed by any known drugs*. Namely, E-coli, the bird-flu, madcow disease, and the HFM - hand-foot-mouth disease.

In particular the Animal Exploitation Photo Journal & Gallery. Very detailed and gory pictures with captions on how various animals are tortured and killed for food, science, product testing, and pleasure. Believe me, it WILL open your eyes.

Let's Not Forget

Your "meat" comes from a creature who has met
A hideous and most untimely death
Nor is it seemly when upon your dish
Lie corpses of a murdered bird or fish.

One fleeting glimpse of any factory farm
Would make the vilest soul cry in alarm.
The chickens, cows and pigs - their lives obscene
Degraded to meat, milk and egg machines.

The cows, their fate sealed at the slaughter house,
Can hear their friends in front of them cry out.
If we pretend that of this they know not,
We grossly underestimate their lot.

The chickens, five crammed tightly to a cage
Oft peck their mates in frightened fits of rage.
The light which blinds these creatures night and day
Adds sin and cruelty to each egg they lay.

The male chicks not appealing to our taste,
Are tossed alive in bags to our great haste.
This writhing heap of bodies is no lie.
Eventually, they suffocate and die.

To better understand a dairy cow
Try picturing this horrid scene somehow:
You're pumped with drugs, you're pregnant and you hurt.
And then your child is robbed from you at birth.

She is no mere automaton, I say.
She mourns the loss of her child several days.
The farmers steal your milk from you and then
For profit's sake, they knock you up again.

The child, a girl will share her mother's fate
If he's a boy, he's off to the veal crate -
A squalid, filthy stall not two feet wide.
He ne'er sees light and cannot turn inside.

A pig's life is the cruellest life around.
The female lies immobile on the ground.
The males can sexually enter her at will.
Her infants suck her nipples through a grill.

Since they've no space, insanity prevails.
And normally, they'd bite each others tails.
For farmers, this would cause a profit drain.
So tails are yanked at birth with squeals of pain.

The more we hide from these injustices
The less we find we know what justice is.
We spare our cats and dogs from such "misuse",
So why allow the other cruel abuse?

These are no more automatons, I say.
They're feeling creatures tortured night and day.
By people who in numbness feel no more,
For use by us who in our haste, ignore!

Here is a cause that rests on naught but us
And though at first we kick and scream and fuss,
We find in time a wholeness that will last
Despite the horrors of our actions past.

Those of religion, here's a truth today.
In front of you. It will not go away.
This is your trial; if you should shut it out.
Then, say, what is religion all about?

When Pigs Cry

Can you imagine imprisoning a dog or a cat the same way?

Now, consider this, pigs are more intelligent than dogs and cats. They are currently ranked #4 in the animal kingdom. They pick up new tricks faster than dogs, and also respond when called. source

Bull Fighting

Witness the suffering, humiliation, and the demise of Bright Eyes.

Nerves damaged, he twitches, urinates, and defecates uncontrollably. But yet his pride makes him try to stand up. Tears, of pain, of sadness, flowed.
